5 Reasons Not to Start Coaching — At Least Not Right Now

Coaching is powerful—but not always the right step. Here are 5 honest reasons not to start coaching, and how to know if now just isn’t the right time.

It might sound counterintuitive for me to say this, but I genuinely believe that not every moment is the right time to begin a coaching process.

As a coach, I meet many people who feel something in their life needs to change — but they’re not always truly available for a deep, meaningful process. Coaching isn’t a magic fix. It requires commitment, courage, and a certain level of readiness.

So if you’re unsure, here are five signs that now might not be the time to start coaching:

1. You don’t have the time or space to dedicate to yourself
Coaching takes time and inner resources. Sure, we’re all busy people juggling packed schedules. But if you’re constantly rushing, jumping from task to task, putting out fires, and barely catching your breath — this might not be the right stage to begin. The same goes if you’re in the middle of a major crisis — let the storm settle a little before starting. Coaching requires spaciousness — not just in your calendar, but also in your mind and heart.

2. You want change, but without changing anything
It might sound funny, but it happens more than you think. Many people hope for something to shift in their lives — but they don’t want to change their routine, job, relationship, or habits. Wanting change isn’t enough — there has to be a willingness to move. Coaching invites us to step outside our comfort zone, which often means shifting our patterns, beliefs, or life structures. If you’re not ready to move — it might not be the right time.

3. You believe the world needs to change — not you
If all fingers are pointed outward — at your boss, ex, kids, or the system — it will likely be hard to generate real change. Coaching only works when we’re willing to take ownership of what is in our hands. The process invites us to turn inward and ask: “How can I take responsibility for my own life?”

4. You want instant results without going through the process
If you’re looking for a magic wand, I completely understand — but coaching probably isn’t the right place for that. Spoiler alert: real change takes time.
Yes, powerful insights can happen quickly — even in the first session — like clarity about what’s next or a glimpse of a new direction. But true transformation is a journey. It requires repetition, experimentation, and sometimes a few stumbles along the way. If you’re looking for quick fixes, coaching may leave you disappointed.

5. You’re not currently able to prioritize or invest financially in the process
Coaching isn’t only an emotional journey — it’s also an intentional investment of your resources in yourself. And sometimes, it’s just not possible (or right) to prioritize it — especially if it means compromising your basic sense of security. That’s okay. The right time and opportunity will come.

Coaching is a gift — but only when its time has truly come. You need to be emotionally and mentally ready, and able to shift your current priorities to make space for yourself. And sometimes, there are valid reasons not to start coaching.

Still unsure? Ask yourself honestly:
Am I truly available for this process?
Am I willing to take responsibility, make changes, and invest in myself?

And if the answer is still “not right now” — that’s completely okay.
